Antarctica with the Sony a9

Sony

I bought my first Sony mirrorless camera in early 2015, having been impressed by the lowlight performance of their sensors and interested in potential applications in my ongoing Nocturnal wildlife project. Back then, the focus performance of mirrorless cameras, and range of available lenses, were serious limitations of the system.

The Sony a9 camera was released in 2017 and boasted incredible advancements in autofocus technology. Today, I believe Sony’s autofocus engine doesn’t just outperform all other mirrorless cameras that I have tested, but also top-of-the-range DSLR cameras as well.

As more native Sony lenses became available, I gradually switched over to Sony for all of my traditional photography (that is everything except for camera traps). Sony released their 400mm f/2.8 in 2018 and the 600mm f/4 in 2019 and for me, the last major gaps in their lens line-up were filled.

As of September 2019, I have been an official Sony Imaging Ambassador.
