Rare African black leopard captured by Will Burrard-Lucas’s extraordinary photos

A wildlife photographer captured stunning images of a rare African black leopard, which would be among the first high-quality photos of such a creature on the continent

About the Black Leopard

There are few creatures as stunning and elusive as a black leopard (as known as a black panther). In Africa, these magnificent cats are so rare as to be the stuff of legend. Then, one day in 2018, I heard about sightings of one in Kenya. With the help of people from the local community, over the course of patient months, I succeeded in capturing a series of high-quality photographs of this extraordinary cat.

My first photographs of the black leopard were released in conjunction with a scientific research paper confirming the existance of this black leopard. This consistuted the first scientific documentation of a black leopard in Africa in more than a century.

Photographing a wild black leopard was the fulfilment of a lifelong dream and the culmination of everything I have been working towards in my career as a wildlife photographer. I recount the story behind how I captured my first images of the panther in my new book and also is in my original blog post: Black Leopard: My quest to photograph the most elusive cat in Africa

Will Burrard-Lucas is a wildlife photographer, inventor and author.

In order to achieve intimate perspectives of some of the most dangerous and elusive creatures on Earth, he developed his own specialist equipment, including BeetleCam, a remote-control camera buggy, and the Camtraptions camera trap system.

His work has been featured by many leading international media outlets and recognized in some of the most prestigious photographic competitions including the Sony World Photography Awards, Travel Photographer of the Year and Wildlife Photographer of the Year. His photographs have been exhibited in venues such as the Natural History Museum in London and the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C. and his limited edition black and white prints are sought after by collectors and photography enthusiasts around the world.

In 2019 his spectacular photographs of a wild black leopard in Africa made headlines around the world as they accompanied the first scientific documentation of such a creature on the continent for more than a century. Thereafter he returned to the black leopard’s territory and worked for more than six months to capture the ultimate photograph of the animal under a starry night sky. This quest is chronicled in his new book, The Black Leopard, published by Chronicle Books in March 2021.
