Camtraptions
Products for Wildlife Photographers & Filmmakers
As I started developing devices such as BeetleCam for my personal photography projects, I also started receiving requests from other photographers and filmmakers who wanted me to build similar devices for them. It was clear to me that there was demand for specialist equipment for remote and camera trap photography. On returning from my year in Zambia, I decided the time was right to explore this opportunity further…
In October 2013, I registered a new company, Camtraptions Ltd, and we launched in January 2014. Our first products were BeetleCams and BeetleCopters (drones capable of carrying cameras ranging in size from a gopro up to a medium-sized DSLR). Eventually we would stop producing drones, as the market soon became saturated with low-cost alternatives.

BeetleCams cater for a small market of mostly professional photographers and filmmakers and I knew that in the long-term they were not enough to build the business around. Where I saw much more opportunity was in the field of camera trap photography, as anyone can set up a camera trap in their back garden and start capturing amazing images of elusive and nocturnal wildlife, the likes of which could not be achieved any other way. I set about converting the prototype camera traps that I had developed in Zambia in to a range of easy-to-use products. At the end of 2014, we released our first sensor for DSLR camera traps and also a strong metal camera housing.

Since then, we have continued to expand our ecosystem of camera trap equipment and released several new versions of our sensor. Our most recent iteration of the sensor is wireless and the realisation of my vision for a device that makes high-quality camera trap photography accessible to everyone.

Our camera housing has also evolved and our latest weatherproof housing has expanded our market beyond wildlife into fields such as sports and time-lapse photography.
Today, Camtraptions is managed by my brother, Matthew, out of our facility in the Cotswolds, UK. I continue to develop new prototypes and rigorously test our products through my own projects in Africa. Most recently I used Camtraptions camera traps and a BeetleCam to photograph rhinos in Kenya. I have also been using Camtraptions camera trap equipment exclusively in my ongoing black panther project.
